Season 1 · Sculptor

Trần Duy

Hailing from Vietnam’s Quảng Nam, Duy was born into a family that embraced artistry, and the impact it can have on people, places, and cultures. Duy himself is the son of Thu Tran, one of the acclaimed masters of Vietnamese sculpture. At first, Duy did not see the value and impact that woodworking would have on his own life – but that soon changed.

A young artist enthralled by his medium, Duy hopes to convey meaning, joy, and cheer in his works. Almost intuitively, Duy puts his family’s artistry on the world stage, highlighting the endless possibilities of wood as an art form, and its intergenerational messages.

Growing up in what he described as “the middle of nowhere,” Duy dreamed of traveling and experiencing the hustle and bustle of cities unbeknownst to his sleepy little village. And travel he did! For a time, Duy wandered all throughout Asia and earned his fair share of hitchhiking and working odd jobs to continue his nomadic lifestyle and dream of experiencing the world at his own pace.

That all changed on one fateful trip to an undisclosed mountain in Thailand. As he was gazing at the sky, he began to introspect, perhaps mulling over the many insights he’s collected over the courses of his trips around Asia, and he realized that he wanted to create something meaningful—he wanted to create something that people could see and touch, and that would give them joy.

It did not take long before Duy realized that the art he grew up with was the perfect vessel for his own creations. He finished his tour of Asia, returned home, and then dedicated his time to learning and listening from his father and their wood carving factory.

“[Now,] I’m more used to making complicated things, difficult things. Now, I can slowly imagine how to make it.”

Duy and his woodwork represent more than a collection of pieces, but a continuation of the journey his father began. Years ago, his father originally learned woodworking to provide for his family, and went on to pass the knowledge to those in his village – and now his son. Today, Duy embodies that same spirit with a passionate work ethic and a mission to inspire contemporary audiences, no matter where they are.
