JACK STORMS

Growing up in the Granite State of New Hampshire, you could say that Jack Storms didn’t need to look far to find inspiration for his work. To this day, he finds beauty and perfection in nature—in the many waterfalls he visits, in the numerous trails he hikes on, and in the countless beaches and sunsets he’s seen.

SEASON 1 - GLASS SCUPTOR

JACK STORMS

Even as a child, Jack already had the eye and hand of an artist. His earliest works were comic book illustrations, initially inspired by the Bible stories he learned of in Sunday school, which eventually evolved into more contemporary stories of superheroes, and eventually became sketches of characters from both high fantasy novels and the numerous Dungeons & Dragons games he’s joined. He realized very early on in life that he enjoyed creating with his hands, and his love for art only deepened as time went on.

Art was really something he valued, stating that, “there was a lot of chaos in my life growing up. This [art] was a calming influence that I could do, create nice things with.” He chose to go to art school, to learn all that he could, and eventually create a viable career out of it. However, the course didn’t exactly prepare their students for life in the real world—sure, they’d teach you all the things you had to learn to be an artist, but they didn’t have as many opportunities or assistance when it came to actual employment, but Jack persevered. He scoured every single trade magazine he could find, trying to learn all that he could from the various fields and industries, and eventually, he found an artist that lived nearby—a couple of miles, in fact—knocked on their door, and asked for a job. This is how his career as not only an artist specializing in glass started.
A perfectionist through and through, Jack doesn’t stop until every aspect of his work is up to par with his very rigorous standards. He’s been known to scrap some of his work, relegating it to his “Bone Yard” of sculptures when he is unhappy with any of them. However, this innate perfectionism comes with it a wonderful perk: his work can’t be copied.

According to him, artists who lived during the same period often borrowed elements from each other for their work—you needed to have an actual art degree to differentiate a Monet from a Manet to a Degas. And though this may have been the case for artists since time immemorial, it isn’t with Jack, especially because he invented and innovated many of the things he uses for his works. This allows him the flexibility to create whatever he wanted, saying “I enjoy playing in that sandbox because I created that sandbox”.

“I enjoyed the mind-hand connection, and having an idea in your head and creating it with your hands.” [When asked what he loves best about what he does]

Jack is a highly-energetic person and it shows in all his works. So many of his pieces can be seen as miniature aspects of his warm and vibrant personality. To him, art is his truest expression of himself, it allows him to create with his hands, and bring to life the many, many projects he juggles in his head. Artists are unable to make mistakes, though it takes a good eye and some skill to rework and create something beautiful out of a supposed mistake. Come find his work on his website jackstorms.com as well as right here on Ronin.
