SEASON 1 - MUSICIAN

BUKHU GANBURGED

Bukhu hails from Ulaanbaatar, in the heart of Mongolia, but has been a global citizen ever since his foray into music. He found his footing as a student at the Mongolian Music and Dance Conservatory in Ulaanbaatar, and after graduating in 2007, slowly started making a name for himself. Aside from winning musical competitions, he was offered to be a member of Mongolian State Morin Khuur Ensemble where the best horse fiddle players are selected.

Based in Australia but whose heart resides in his home of Mongolia, his music blurs the lines between traditional and modern. His composed pieces seamlessly blend the sounds of traditional Mongolian music with modern technology.

With an established music career in Mongolia, in 2009, Bukhu moved to Australia for family matters. Having to start from scratch without having any connections in the Australian music industry, he still pursued his passion for music by busking in the streets of Sydney, wherein he was slowly gaining public attention. He was then featured in national TV and granted the prestigious Distinguished Talent Visa by the Australian Government, hence reestablishing his career in Australia. He now performs at festivals, and even performed in the Sydney Opera House.
According to Bukhu, he dreams about a very simple melody in his sleep, which he develops even more using the Morin Khuur while incorporating other sounds and genres like looping and electronic. He uses more modern tools like his ipad, footpad, and laptop to form a perfect sound altogether.
BUKHU GANBURGED

Mother and Father by Bukhu Ganburged

Bukhu auditioned for The Voice Australia in 2019 and he became famous for his blind audition performance where he performed his favorite piece, Mother and Father. The song's melody came from his dream, one of his "dreaming" compositions. The song describes how one misses their homeland and family when they live in a different place. He wanted to perform his own music with the goal of promoting the Mongolian music and culture to the world. This is in line with his goal of passing his music on to the next generations.

His music blurs the line between the old and the new, seamlessly combining shamanistic elements of Mongolian throat singing and performance, with modern genres that appeal to a mass market of listeners, synthesizing a sort of sound that transcends time and geography.

“Create your own style, learn from others, learn lots of different music. Trust yourself – it might take a long time, but don’t give up. I never gave up on my music. You’ll see the magic will happen one day.”

For Bukhu, music is very interesting. He likes experimenting with throat singing and fiddle playing with other genres. He collaborates with other artists and modern sounds to produce beautiful pieces with the goal of combining his raw folk music with world music.
