SEASON 1 - ROBOT SCULPTOR & GRAPHIC ARTIST

BRUNO BRAUER

Bruno Brauer wasn’t always the established artist and sculptor many know him as today. In fact, during the first few years of his career as an artist, this young man from Paris worked in a completely different industry. According to Bruno, he’s always had a knack for the arts: as a child, he always loved drawing. As a teenager, he grew up reading comic books and watching stories about robots. Eventually, as a young adult, he attended a school for the arts, and break out as a full-fledged graphic artist, poised to share his work with the world.

Bruno’s philosophy in life and art is simple: everything has to have a second life, and a second chance to be utilized and appreciated again.

Coming out of school, he landed a job at an advertising agency specializing in creating materials for musicians. Here, he created artwork that was eventually used as CD and DVD covers, posters, and as marketing materials for the musicians he worked with. For 20 or so odd years, he loved what he did. But something he also loved was creating sculptures. At first, he would create simple structures out of basic, everyday materials like lamps and light bulbs. Creating art like this was his way of disconnecting from the rigors of work, and was his avenue to relax.
Over time, and as his skillset grew, he began creating more and more complex structures from discarded industrial parts that were more intimately packed and more complicated to assemble. Despite the ever-growing number of sculptures he’s made, he couldn’t just exit his life as a graphic designer. According to him, try as he might, many galleries and collectors during this time refused to take his work, stating that they wanted something more “classical” or “modern,” and weren’t really ready for the retro-futuristic designs that Bruno has become well-known for.

As the years passed and tastes changed, Bruno eventually found collectors and was able to collaborate with galleries that showcased his work in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Hong Kong, and even Taiwan. As his success as a sculptor became more apparent, he left his job at the agency and started his own studio, where he could focus completely on his work. That work often makes him feel like, in his own words, a metaphoric Gepetto, bringing life to his many, many Pinocchios. And that fact isn’t too hard to see, seeing as how all of the things he creates are unique and seem as if they could come to life at any moment.

“[Bruno] considers himself as Gepetto, creating life out of inanimate objects, and always having fun with what he creates. In his work and in his art, [Bruno] wants to highlight, especially to the youth, that it’s important to reuse things.” (When asked how he stays inspired in what he does and what he wishes to express to those who follow his works).

Bruno truly loves what he does, and that is very much apparent, given the time and effort he puts into every single sculpture, as well as through the passion and perseverance that drives him forward to this day. For him, the thrill comes from hunting for the perfect vintage piece (which, he says, he sources from his global network of friends and acquaintances) and giving them a second life through his sculptures. His followers and collectors from the world over are inclined to agree. Learn more about this modern-life Gepetto through his sculptures and his other work right here on Ronin.
