SEASON 1 - UNDERWATER PAINTER

OLGA NIKITINA

Olga Nikitina’s childhood was spent, for the most part, close to nature. She had spent the first few years of her life in a vibrant and lively military camp with her family and close friends. Her father was serving as a soldier, while her mother took on the role of the music teacher to the children of the other members of staff. She fondly remembers playing outside, sometimes by herself, but often in the presence of family and friends, and loved seeing all the sights and sounds, and smells that their little Ukrainian camp had to offer. However, this reverie would not last forever, as, during the fall of the Soviet Union, she and her family were forced to relocate, and they eventually found themselves in Ulyanovsk, Russia. This is where she would spend the rest of her childhood years, before eventually discovering her calling as an artist.

A woman of many talents, Olga proves that one can find their calling in life at the intersection of their passion and their capabilities. It’s there waiting for you to discover it, but only if you have the patience and determination to do so.

Treading the path to becoming an artist wasn’t much of a difficult choice, though. For Olga, many of her days were spent in a creative environment, encouraged primarily by her equally creative family. She enjoyed outdoor activities much like any child, but at home, she was surrounded by musicians and painters, and she fondly remembers days watching her grandfather play a multitude of Russian folk instruments, and times when she and her mother would watch plays at the theater. When it came time to choose a career path that she would follow for the rest of her life, the choice ultimately came to either become a lawyer or become a designer. She knew exactly what she wanted to become.
Olga entered the Ulyanovsk State University in Russia where she would study interior design for six years. During those six years, she would hone her craft, mainly through drawing and painting, while at the same time staying true to the various physical activities that she loved doing as a child. However, despite being an artist for most of her life, her path to becoming a diving instructor came about almost by accident. As part of her work as an interior designer, she had to design aquariums for a project. Seeing tropical fish this close fascinated her and encouraged her to see them in their natural habitat.

On one of her many travels, she came upon one of the locals at a beach in Sri Lanka. The man, seeing her simply laying on the beach, asked her why she was just laying there and not enjoying the water. He then offered to teach her how to scuba dive, and almost by accident, she acquiesced and instantly fell in love with the richness of the underwater world. Olga loved being close to nature as a child, and suddenly, she was back in that childhood state. It may be a different world than what she grew up in, but it was equally breathtaking. Over time, and as her confidence and expertise underwater grew, she would eventually intersect her two passions—painting and diving—and begin creating painted wonders under the ocean. And though some of her technique for painting underwater borrows from contemporary artist Denis Lotarev, much of her ways of working remain hers, perfected through hundreds of hours of painting and experimenting underwater.

“First I, by accident, learned how to dive, and then I fell in love completely with the underwater world.” [How she conquered her fear and embraced her newfound love of the water]

Having fallen in love completely with the ocean and all its wonders, she now lives close to the water. When she isn’t teaching others the basics of diving as a diving instructor, she spends her time painting or just admiring the world that she’s in. The pieces she creates offer a glimpse not only into a world many may never see in their lifetime but also into the soul of a woman who truly loves what she does.
